Our Team

The CHPA state and local government affairs team works to advance and protect the interests of over-the-counter (OTC) consumer healthcare product manufacturers before legislative and regulatory bodies at the state and local level. We monitor policy activities and legislation in all 50 states, advocating on behalf of the consumer healthcare product industry by working with state lawmakers and officials in crafting a regulatory environment conducive to affordable and accessible healthcare. Guided by the CHPA State & Local Government Affairs Committee, our team executes on strategies to gain support for policies that create a consumer friendly environment for OTC medications, dietary supplements, and consumer medical devices.

The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care plays a vital role in America’s healthcare system. Allowing individuals to conveniently access basic healthcare products helps take pressure off an overburdened medical infrastructure and empowers consumers to responsibly manage their own wellbeing. Millions of Americans utilize consumer healthcare products as an affordable first line of treatment. Self-diagnosing and medicating appropriately not only saves money compared to unnecessary doctor visits, but also saves valuable time and resources within the healthcare system. Opting to self-treat also helps curb the overprescription of and dependency on prescription medicines. For people with chronic conditions, ready access to sanitary supplies, bandages, and other recovery aids promotes self-reliance and wellbeing between doctor appointments. Overall, supporting responsible self-care enables a healthcare system focused on preventing and managing health issues for all, versus only treating advanced illness for some. Over-the-counter products will continue serving the critical role of supporting preventative community health.
